A lerp is a protective cover of crystallized honeydew produced insects are commonly referred to as lerp insects.
Bell Miners eat the sweet lerps but not the lerp insect. Due to their aggressive behavior, and high numbers, Bell Miners drive away other insectivorous birds that would otherwise help to control insect numbers, this causes die back in the trees in large areas.
